- <14>^C Age Measurement of Japanese Tree-ring Samples with Single-Year Spacing Using AMS : A preparation method of α-cellulose and a comparison with the existent calibration curve

^<14>C age is calculated on the hypothesis that the atmospheric ^<14>C concentration has been constant for the past several ten thousand years. Practically, the ^<14>C concentration has time variation, therefore, ^<14>C age is different from actual calendar age. The existent calibration curve between ^<14>C age and calender age which was reported by Stuiver & Pearson was established based on the ^<14>C data measured for the bidecadal tree-rings of trees grown in America and Ireland. So, it is not certain whether the curve is adequate for the calibration on ^<14>C age of the samples that have grown in the other area or that have been produced from annual plants. In this study, ^<14>C age was measured on Japanese tree-ring samples with single-year spacing using AMS, for the purpose of comparing the age with the existent calibration curve. The tree-ring samples were sliced by 15 micron, in order to make pretreatments easier. The method of extracting α-cellurose from sliced samples consists of a sequence of the following treatments ; with 1.2N HCl solution, with 1.2N NaOH solution, with NaClO_2 solution and with 17.5% NaOH solution. The average of ΔT is 17.5±14.1 ^<14>C years, where ΔT is a subtraction of the ^<14>C age of the existent curve from the measured ^<14>C age in this study. Although this result shows that ^<14>C age of Japanese tree-ring has no significant systematic difference from the existent curve, the unbiased variance based on the distribution of ΔT is larger than that expected from measured statistical errors. This larger variance of ΔT may be caused by (i) the difference of analyzed samples (single-year or decadal) and (ii) the variation of carbon isotopic fractionation in the sample graphitization and the ionization in the 10n source.
