Abstract
There is no accurate way of knowing the prices of gold and silver bullion in the Edo period, as these prices were subject to bakufu (shogunate) regulation. However, it is possible to estimate bullion prices from the compositions of standard coins and data of the exchange rate in market, since currency transactions were conducted in exchange market under the Tokugawa coinage system as a unique triple monetary standard system. Gold coins were made of an alloy of gold and silver, while silver coins contained significant amounts of copper. Unlike gold and silver, copper bullion were on the market, and its price can be verified from the record. This enables us to estimate the prices of gold, silver, and copper bullion, also taking into consideration the market prices, i.e. exchange rate of gold and silver coins. The currency exchange ratio, which considers the value of all the materials, is determined by coin weight, material input coefficient, and bullion price. Solving this equation in reverse, we sought the bullion price. The results reveal a significant upward trend in the copper price, as well as a moderate upward trend in gold. The absolute values for gold and silver parity, however, did not diverge much from the international standard.
