• Review of distributional records of Parascorpaena mcadamsi and P. moultoni (Scorpaenidae) in Japanese waters, and notes on sexual dichromatism and dimorphism of the two species

説明

Thirty-nine (15.5–65.4 mm standard length) and 44 specimens (15.3–56.1 mm standard length) collected from Japanese waters were identified as Parascorpaena mcadamsi and Parascorpaena moultoni, respectively, in this study. Based on the specimens, P. mcadamsi is newly recorded from the Izu Islands (Hachijo-jima island), Kochi Prefecture, Kagoshima mainland, Shimokoshiki-shima, Kuro-shima, Mage-shima, Tanega-shima, Suwanose-jima, Tokuno-shima, and Iriomote-jima islands, and P. moultoni from Mage-shima, Tanega-shima, Okinoerabu-jima, Ishigaki-jima, and Yonaguni-jima islands. In addition, examination of gonads, DNA, morphology, and coloration in the two species revealed that the two species usually exhibited sexual dichromatism (dorsal-fin black blotch present in males, absent in females), and P. mcadamsi had sexual dimorphism (canine teeth on lower jaw anteriorly only in males, and maxilla depth in males deeper than that of females). With the exception of dorsal-fin blotch, no sexual differences were found in P. moultoni.
