Description

Evaluation of the leaching behavior of substances from pyrite-bearing soil with leaching tests such as exposure tests and percolation tests requires a long period. Therefore, the batch test method combined an accelerated oxidation treatment with humidification and heating to promote oxidation, and a batch leaching test with differing liquid-solid ratios, was developed. The batch test method was then compared to the up-flow percolation test about soil samples from igneous rocks. The oxidation process of soils during the percolation test was confirmed by superimposing the Nernst equation on the pH-ORP diagram. The “cumulative average concentration” of the percolation test, which indicates the concentration without substances eluting as well as the condition of the batch test method, was calculated from the cumulative elution volume, and compared with the batch test method. The results suggest that the batch test method can predict the long-term elution behavior of sulfate ions in the long-term up-flow percolation test.
