Description

To measure the actual current distribution in a solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) during high-temperature H₂O/CO₂ co-electrolysis, direct current measurements were performed in each part of the cell by segmenting the oxygen electrode current collectors into three sections along parallel cathode gas flow channels. To reproduce the current distribution caused by reactant consumption during electrolysis, three power supplies were used under voltage control to maintain equal electrode potential among the segments. As a result, the currents in the upstream, midstream, and downstream segments among the gas flow direction were successfully measured separately. Analysis of the measured data indicates that the exchange current density during co-electrolysis is smaller than that during steam electrolysis, resulting in a reduced variation in current density along the flow channels. The measured data are useful for elucidating co-electrolysis behavior and for building numerical models to design optimized co-electrolysis systems with improved performance and durability.
