Description

Luminescence spectra of NH4I have been measured upon UV-light excitation in the fundamental absorption region at low temperatures. The spectra include a broad emission band centered at 3.74 eV and a weak narrow band at 5.31 eV. The 3.74 eV band has long lifetime of 0.29 μs at 11 K. This luminescence is confirmed to arise from the lowest triplet state of self-trapped excitons. The 5.31 eV luminescence is located closely to the peak position of the first exciton absorption band, and is attributed to the radiative annihilation of free excitons. These results indicate that the free and the self-trapped exciton states can coexist in NH4I, both being separated by an adiabatic potential barrier.
