During the months of M<SUB>3</SUB> and M<SUB>4</SUB> (M<SUB>n</SUB> ; n months after sowing), all plants were in a rosette form and the dry weight of both shoot and root increased gradually. After bolting started in M<SUB>5</SUB>, both parts of the plants grew exponentially. The dry weight of both parts reached a maximum at M<SUB>9</SUB> when flowers bloomed on the main axis, and decreased significantly thereafter because the rosette leaves started to die and then leaves along main axis wilted successively from bottom to top. Axillary buds developed about one month later and the dry weight of both parts reached a second peak during the flowering of the axillary buds (M<SUB>12</SUB>).<BR>The content of saikosaponins in the main root during rosette form was higher when the plant was in the rosette form particularly at M<SUB>4</SUB> than that during the remaining growth stages. The contents in the main root after bolting decreased during flowering (M<SUB>9</SUB> and M<SUB>12</SUB>). However, change in the content of saikosaponins in the 1st-order and 2nd-order lateral roots and in the 3rd-order lateral roots differed significantly from those of the main root.
