Hydration of several sesquiterpene hydrocarbons with formic acid or water in the presence of synthetic zeolites."}],"description":[{"type":"abstract","notation":[{"@language":"en","@value":"Hydration of longifolene (1), isolongifolene (2), β-caryophyllene (3) and α-humulene (4) was investigated with formic acid or water in the presence of synthetic zeolites.<BR>Hydration of (1) and (2) with formic acid in the presence of 3 A and 4 A zeolites gave longifenchyl alcohol (6) and longiborneol (7), respectively as a main product. Under particular conditions (H<SUB>2</SUB>O-H Type zeolites), 9-oxoisolongifolene ([8] was obtained in high selectivity from (2).<BR>Caryophylla-1-ol (β-caryophyllene alcohol) (11) and dihydroneocroven-9β-ol (13) were obtained as two major products from ( 3 ). Hydration of (4) with formic acid in the presence of TSZ-330 HSA zeolite afforded predominantly 10-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)-3, 7-dirnethylbicyclo [5.3.O] dec-2-ene (17).
