A total of 1400 nurses, who had more than one year experience in one hospital, participated and received questionnaires with an open-ended question which asks the reason why choosing the hospital for one's first job as a nurse by mail. Six hundred and eighty-four nurses (48.9%) returned their answers, and 452 of them answered the open-ended question. The 452 descriptions were analyzed by Berelson's content analysis and 28 categories were formed, which showed the reasons for nursing students' choice of hospitals for their first job as a nurse, such as \"location\" or \"number of the beds\" of the hospital. The reliability of categories was confirmed by the agreement rates calculated by the Scott's formula (80.0%, 89.2%, and 90.3%). Thirteen criteria of choosing hospital for one's first job as a nurse that nursing students used, were lead, based on the 28 categories. The results showed that the reasons for the choice of hospitals for one's first job as a nurse were different between two groups; they were \"the baccalaureate/associate degree graduates\" and \"diploma graduates\" (p<.05). These findings will be useful for providing effective career guidance for nursing
