Description

The purpose of this study is to obtain how to color the facades of a street including their circumstances. A survey was made of the colors used on the facades of four Japanese streets; Imaicho, Kawagoe, Nihonbashi and Shibuya, and three European streets; Ghent, Salzburg and Vienna. The historical streets possess color harmony with natural materials in both Japan and Europe. Generally speaking, the Japanese street has characteristics such that the colors are chosen from the wider range of hue, value and chroma and that neutral colors are used more often. For the future preservation or redevelopment of a Japanese street, the way is best found by reference to a European street which has similar history in color.
