Fourteen cases of ulcers including erosion (U1-I) on the oral side of colon cancer ‹U1 (+) group› were studied in comparison with 72 cases without ulcer ‹U1 (-) group›. All cases in the U1 (+) group had symptoms due to the colic obstruction. Histologically, severe edema, congestion and infiltration of inflammatory cell in layers deeper than the submucosal layer around the ulcer were found in all cases in the Ul (+) group, and fibrous intimal hyperplasia and vacuolar degeneration of smooth muscle cells in the tunica media of the small mesenteric arteries were found in 8 cases. In the Ul (-) group, the frequency of these histological changes was correlated with the severity of the obstructive symptoms.
