Out of 235 patients who received esophagoscopic examinations in our department, 14 cases of cancer of the esophagus were found, The relation ship of chief complaints and symptoms on their first hospital visits to the prognosis of their diseases was studied. In 41 cases, 28 males and 13 females, 1) 28 patients had a chief complaint of disturbance of deglutition, 2) 8 patients had unusual sensation on deglutition, 3) 4 patients had a pain on swallowing, 4) One patient had a sensation of passing food in the esophagus.<BR>Among the 28 patients with a chief complaint of disturbance of deglutition 8 patients had the first hospital visit within one month after they had developed the disturbance, 10 patients in 1 to 2 month, 3 in 2 to3 month, 4 in5 to 6 month, 3 after 6 month. In 13 patients, however, the disturbance of deglutition had been preceded by the unusual sensation on swallowing.<BR>To detect malignancy of the esophagus in theearly stage, every individual should be routinely examined in aeregular checkup of the esophagus as well as the stomach, and the subject who complains of any kind of abnormality should thoroughly be investigated by means of dynamic study with TV fluoroscopy and esophagoscopy.
