従来の技術では歩行者でないものを誤って歩行者として検出してしまう誤検出が問題であった．従来技術のHOG特徴量では, 物体画素ごとの輝度勾配方向のヒストグラムで表現するため, 異なる形状であっても同じ表現となってしまう場合がある．そこで, 歩行者検出性能向上のために, 2つの画素の組合せについて輝度勾配方向の共起の頻度を2次元のヒストグラム（輝度勾配方向共起ヒストグラム）により物体形状表現することで, 詳細な形状抽出を行うCoHOG特徴量を開発した．ベンチマークデータセットによる評価により,
