Description

An 88-year-old woman infested with an extraordinary large number of larval ticks visited our hospital. We removed 229 larvae, which were identified as Amblyomma testudinarium. In spite of an administration of minocycline hydrochloride, the patient developed a high fever, systemic arthralgia and enlarged lymph nodes in the bilateral axillas two days after the removal of the ticks. Minocycline hydrochloride was ineffective and then was discontinued. The patient’s condition was gradually improved after treatment with several other antibiotics. Results of blood exams for diseases transmitted by ticks including Japanese spotted fever and Lyme disease were all negative. The cause of the systemic symptom was not elucidated.
