However, 60 active faults that my generate tsunamis have been recently identified, but with great uncertainties. The study conducted tsunami hazard assessments along the northern Japan-Sea coast considering the source uncertainties with special focus on populated harbor cities. The results suggest that a large portion of coastal areas is protected by coastal sand dunes developed along the shoreline even though the source magnitude is greatly enhanced to the 3-sigma level. Severe inundation occurs in lowlying areas around small rivers and inside harvors. Also, We confirmed the protective effect of harbor breakwaters to decrease inundation in hinterlands through hazard assessments with and without
