Most of the existing studies projected the future beach erosion using the Bruun Rule; however, the Bruun Rule does not take into account the sediment supply from rivers and the longshore sediment transport. We investigated characteristics of the long-term beach erosion in Japan quantitatively and evaluated the validity of the Bruun Rule.<br> At 10 beaches in Japan where tide data exist for more than 100 years, we compared the shoreline changes measured using old maps in 1900, 1950, and 1990, with those calculated using the Bruun Rule. The shoreline changes calculated using Bruun Rule show good agreement with the measured shoreline changes from 1900 to 1950, but show disagreement with those from 1950 to 1990. It is considered that large amounts of sand were supplied to the coasts from the rivers before 1950, but the sediment supply from rivers might be reduced mainly due to dam constructions after 1950, and beaches have been eroded significantly. Then we modified the Bruun Rule to include the sediment supply and the longshore transport.
