As a result of our examination of medieval documentary and pictorial materials, it is confirmed that barrels appeared early in the 15th century at the earliest. Since barrels appeared in China during the Hokuso period, they were introduced into Japan rather later compared with tubs. In Japan there were various initial forms of barrels, and we could confirm through pictorial materials written early in the 16th century that there existed three types of barrels, i.e. barrels similar to 4-to daru (a barrel capable of containing 72 liters), yanagi-daru, and flat barrels.
