Description
Arching- and history effects in granular heaps have up to now been mostly investigated with the discrete element method only in two dimensions, as only few research groups have the necessary simulation codes of non-spherical particles in three dimensions. We investigate the history dependence of heap formation in "quasi-two-dimensional systems" (particles between parallel walls) experimentally and with a discrete element simulation in three dimension to understand how far the physics is that of a narrow silo rather than of an actual two-dimensional heap.
