This literary fad, although not so far taken very seriously, seems to reflect the cultural trend of the age. Among those writers Tanizaki is the one who was most involved in it, greatly influenced by Oscar Wild's aesthetics. In his bizzare stories Tanizaki also developed his earlier motif - the unity of art and life - into the question of fiction and truth. In this essay I will concentrate on Hakuchu-kigo, a newspaper serial in Osaka Mainichi Shinbun and Tokyo Nichinichi Shinbun, in relation to Gustav Klimt's paintings, and the pictures, ads and articles in the newspaper.
