This paper describes a luminous phenomenon of fluorescent materials excited by a piezoelectric transformer (PT). Light emission from fluorescent materials is observed together with N2 discharge in a chamber. The fluorescent materials may be excited by ultraviolet (UV) light which is emitted from the N2 discharge or fast electrons accelerated in high electric field generated by the PT. To clarify the excitation source of the fluorescent materials, emission spectra of the two kinds of phosphors, ZnO:Zn and ZnS:Cu,Au, in the N2 discharge and the gas pressure dependence are examined. Temporal variations of both light emissions are observed using a charged couple device (CCD) camera to investigate the dynamic behavior of the luminous phenomenon. As a result, it is found that ZnO:Zn is excited by fast electrons under low-pressure conditions. ZnS:Cu,Au is excited by UV light from 315 to 479 nm because the wavelength region is in good agreement with the excitation spectrum for ZnS:Cu,Au. The excitation process of fluorescent materials is clarified in this study.
