Abstract

In a previous paper, it was reported that the shrink fitter was able to improve the fitting strength of the shrink fit between a ceramic shaft and a metal ring at elevated temperature. There are two types of the shrink fitters at present, the monolithic type and the bimetal type. In this paper, the fitting strength of the shrink fitted assemblies using the monolithic shrink fitter or the bimetal one was calculated for two ranges of coefficient of thermal expansion, 0.0∼11.7×10-6(/°C) and 18.8∼42.5×10-6(/°C). For 18.8∼42.5×10-6(/°C), the assembly using the monolithic shrink fitter was stronger than that using the bimetal shrink fitter when the thickness of the shrink fitter in the radial direction was 4mm. The assembly using the bimetal shrink fitter was, however, stronger over approximately 400°C when the thickness was 1mm. For 0.0∼11.7×10-6(/°C), the assembly using the bimetal shrink fitter was stronger over approximately 400°C regardless of the thickness.
