The event layer is intercalated with an organic medium-grained sand layer (called “Kurosuna” in Japanese) and peat.  The event layer, which shows thinning and fining trends in an inland direction, is distributed at least 150m inland from the present shoreline and at a height of 3.86m above sea level.  Occurrence of the diatom indicator of an outer bay environment <i>Thalassionema nitzschioides</i> marks the event layer.  These features indicate that the event layer was formed by a tsunami.  The time of the event layer formation is inferred to be in the early to middle 1600s, because the event layer is deposited right below the AD 1663 Us-b tephra, separated by a very thin intervening
