Description

A pasty Al-6%Cu alloy vigorously agitated in the liquid-solid temperature range was cast into a shell mold at a pressure of 7kg/cm2. The alloy containing Ti and B was castable at a solid fraction up to 0.4 or 0.5 and under a low pressure. Size and distribution of solid particles which crystallized primarily in the alloy agitated in the liquid-solid temperature range have a remarkable influence on castability. Grain refining by small addition of Ti and B has a favorable effect on the castability. Surface roughness of a mold wall is almost reproduced on the cast surface.
