Adsorption behavior and the effect on colloid stability of water soluble polymer having a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) have been studied using polystyrene latices plus hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC). Three HPC-samples used here were obtained from commercial products by fractional precipitation. The molecular weights (Mw) were determined by the viscosity measurements as 93×104, 30×104 and 5.3×104. The LCST values were between 45 and 55°C.<BR>Saturated adsorbance (As) depended significantly on the molecular weight of HPC and on the adsorption temperature. The temperature dependence of the As was remarkable : the As at each LCST was 1.5 times as large as the value at 30°C. Furthermore, the maximum As values obtained at the LCST were kept over a long time duration at room temperature. The dense adsorption layer formed on the latex particles at LCST showed strong protection against salt and temperature. The latex particles treated at LCST did not coagulated in the concentrated MgCl2 solution (-5 mol/l).
