Description

Poly(p-maleimidostyrene) (PMS) having α-chlroroalkylbenzene framework at the polymer end was synthesized by functional group selective polymerization for the styryl group of N-(4-vinylphenyl)maleimide with an initiator system consisting of α-chloroethylbenzene and tin(IV) chloride. PMS was combined with silver hexafluoroantimonate to be used as a component for a macromolecular initiator of ring-opening polymerizations of cyclic ethers. The ring-opening polymerizations of THF and ethylene oxide gave polymeric materials with bimodal molecular weight distributions. The high molecular weight part of those polymeric materials possessed higher molecular weight than that of PMS used as a one of components of the initiator, while the low molecular weight part had almost the same molecular weight as that of PMS. The 1H NMR analyses of the high molecular weight parts of those polymeric materials revealed that they had the structures of block copolymers of PMS-b-polyether.<br>
