前期中新世末期～中期中新世の北海道中央部では，島弧–島弧衝突により南北約400km，幅数10kmにわたる地域に狭長な前縁盆地群（foreland basins）が形成された．これら前縁盆地群の埋積層に対しては，これまでに多くの堆積学的な研究が行われてきた．このうち前縁盆地群南部を構成する日高堆積盆の埋積層は，陸上分布（日高海岸地域）および沖合延長部（日高沖）ともに石油胚胎の期待が高まっている．
本巡検では，日高海岸地域に分布する中部～上部中新統を対象に，日高堆積盆の埋積に伴う堆積システムの変化（トラフ充填型タービダイト→プロファンデルタ堆積物→ファンデルタスロープ堆積物）を観察し，従来の研究で解釈された堆積学的枠組みの特徴について議論する．また層序や地質構造と油徴との関係や泥火山の分布について，石油地質学的な観点から新たに議論する場としたい．
