<p>In recent years, Japanese common squid that the main type of squid produced in Japan has been suffering from poor catches. The poor catch of Japanese common squid is an issue that affects the entire value chain from production to consumption.</p><p>The market for processed squid products is diverse. This study focuses on the sales trend of processed squid products in retail and aims to clarify the aspects of the changes in the contemporary situation.</p><p>The research methodology focused on the analysis of point of sales (POS) data. The POS data used in this study were collected from the top seven supermarkets in Japan in terms of sales, from which an expanded estimation was made to estimate the sales value of the Japanese retail industry. The period of analysis was from 2013 to 2019, when data were obtained. The years 2020 to 2022, when the Covid-19 spread, were excluded from the scope of the study because of temporary changes in consumption behavior due to refraining from going out.</p><p>The results of the study showed that the impact of the decrease in squid production was small for higher processed products (delicacies and confectionery (dry)), but very large for lower processed products (squid rounds and slices, sashimi, boiled squid), resulting in a large decrease in the sales value of these products.</p>
