Description

At the head of Yatsushiro Sea, shallowing due to sediment deposition has been progressing, leading to several problems such as poor drainage in the adjacent agricultural lands, blockage of sluice gates, and a decline in fishery value caused by reduced seawater exchange.

In this study, ground elevation surveys were conducted and compared with historical data. Subsequently, changes in tidal currents, wave conditions, and sedimentation/erosion environments due to land reclamation were analyzed. The results showed that in 2024, ground elevation reached its highest level, indicating significant progress in shallowing. The annual rate of change remained almost constant over the periods from 1991 to 2008 and from 2008 to 2024. In contrast, the period from 2006 to 2018 showed a trend of erosion, which deviated from the other periods. The analysis demonstrated that both tidal currents and wave heights decreased due to the effects of land reclamation, creating conditions more favorable for sediment deposition in the study area.
