Description

This study was designed to evaluate the readability and legibility of Japanese fonts used in small screen environments. An analysis of the correlation between the readability test results and visual attributes showed that stroke density and character area were significant factors that affected the readability test for all three display conditions: short sentences and consecutive sentences where the font size alternated between larger and smaller. However, whether these factors directly influenced the readability or not depended on the background color of the display. We conducted a legibility test using similar character pairs that could be specified. The results confirmed that discriminating between specific character pairs in each font was straightforward. The difference analysis clarified the effect of the difference between simple character pairs such as katakana and alphanumeric characters than on hiragana, and also confirmed the characteristics of the design of a specific character pair.
