説明

What does it mean for an adult to shed tears? It has been clarified that crying in childhood has a signaling function that draws attention to themselves from caregivers. On the other hand, crying continues to occur even when one is grown up, or even when being alone. Therefore, it has been pointed out that adult crying has more functions than signaling. By focusing on the functional aspects of adult crying, this paper summarizes the interpersonal and intrapersonal functions of crying. The former works for with drawing support from others, and the latter is to undo people's emotional arousal and physiological reactions through the act of crying. Furthermore, this review clarifies three necessities for crying research: (1) assessing social contexts in detail, (2) classifying the meaning of tears according to different emotion and (3) developing the indicators that would determine the triggers and timing of crying.
