Description

In recent studies, the Greco-Roman banquet has been focused on as a cultural background of the Lord's Supper. The banquet, consisted of the major meal and the symposium, was a social institution that pervaded a wide range of groups from philosophers to mysteries. In the previous studies, the Lord's Supper (1 Corinthians 11) has been investigated in terms of the customs of the Greco-Roman banquet, but its relatedness with the worship activities (1 Corinthians 12-14) has not been discussed except in some studies. In this essay, I argue that the Corinthian church accepts the customs of the banquet and has a sequence of events from the Lord's Supper through the worship activities. Furthermore, I examine the relationship between unbelievers (1 Cor 14:23-24) and the Lord's Supper, which was hardly paid attention in the previous studies. In this essay, it turns out that 1 Corinthians 11-14 deals with a sequence of events in one setting around the table in “house-church." Also, it becomes important to understand Paul's acceptance of unbelievers (1 Cor 7:14). Judging from these arguments I point out the possibility that the unbelievers were exceptionally allowed to participate in the Eucharist in the Corinthian church.
