Description

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common salivary gland tumor. Tyrosine-rich crystalloids (TRCs) are rarely seen in the chondromyxoid stromal component of this tumor. We report a case of pleomorphic adenoma with TRCs in 70s-year-old woman. The tumor was 65 mm in diameter and located in the right parotid gland. Microscopic examination revealed numerous floret-like TRCs in abundant myxoid stroma and myoepithelial nests. TRCs were more clearly observed by Giemsa stain. TRCs are most frequently seen in pleomorphic adenoma, however, they are also known to be seen in other salivary gland tumors, including malignant tumors, and non-neoplastic tissues. TRCs should not be a diagnostic clue for pleomorphic adenoma.
