Defecation effect was defined as the percentage of patients who defecated the day after taking a stimulant laxative. The state of intestinal contents’ retention was examined using simple abdominal radiography and ultrasound images. Colonic peristalsis was observed using electroenterogram.<br>　【Results】Of the 11 participants with a mean age of 85.4 years, 7 were taking a stimulant laxative daily（for more than 20 months）, and 10 of the 11 were taking it when needed. They had bowel movements for an average of 40.1 days. The defecation efficacy was 43.0% for those taking a stimulant laxative daily and 55.2% for those taking it when needed. Accumulation of gas and feces was observed in the colon.
