Description

Tribological characteristics of lubricants restricted by thin oil film formation were evaluated by carrying out a series of plane strain cold extrusion experiments for copper products. Evaluation of lubricant and added volumes of lubricant additives for cold metal forming were investigated by the variation in degree of plastic deformation, extrusion load, and surface condition of the billet. An extrusion apparatus with a combination of a wedge die and plane plate tool with a small extrusion ratio of 1.1 was used to measure the amount of plastic deformation that resulted from using different lubricants. The billet was made of OFC : Oxygen-Free Copper, C1020 (JIS) and the extrusion apparatus was made of SKD11 (JIS). In this study, double fractionated palm olein, that is known as super olein, was evaluated and antioxidant agent, tertiary-butyl-hydroquinone (TBHQ) was added as lubricant additives. TBHQ concentration 0%, 0.015%, 0.030% and 0.045% were prepared for each super olein. Comparison of the amount of plastic deformation in the deformation zone of the billet for super olein and paraffinic mineral oil suggests that super olein has the same tribological performance as paraffinic mineral oil. Addition of TBHQ suppressed the increase in surface hardness of the billet.
