The recent governmental numerical targets of the increase in Japanese students studying abroad have exerted serious leverage on Japanese institutions for higher education. This new landscape of the Japanese educational sector has embroiled the author in the trend of strengthening short-term study-abroad programs. In fact, he has been making constant efforts to enhance the quality of his summer program at the University of Cambridge for the purpose of appealing to more students to file an application to the program. As part of this endeavor, he will soon publish a book on how participants in a short-term program in the UK are expected to make a practical and academic choice of the destinations of their optional free-day travels during their stay in a way that will meaningfully supplement the main weekday part of the short-term academic program. The present paper summarizes the contents of the book, mainly trying to explain their aims for the good reason that the author has dispensed with such explanations in the manuscript of the book, taking space, cost and nature of it into consideration. The paper recommends not only places of the participants’ own interest, but also some selected World Heritage sites, castles and palaces, cathedrals and chapels, ruins and historic sites, museums and art galleries, gardens, geographical features, schools and architecture, markets, transportation, preserved railways, factories, and amusements, with a fair emphasis on their academic aspects and in a radically abridged manner. He earnestly hopes that this writing will be useful for the participants and the staff members of his own program and other similar short-term programs to be held in the UK.
