The study focused on a single facility in Japan that provides care services to a large population of older adults living with dementia. A multi-condition design was employed with three intervention conditions:without a robot, with a robot, and with a robot and the presence of a third party（ i.e., those who communicated with older adults, such as staff members）. A mixed-methods approach was applied to verify the effects:quantitative analysis of users’ emotions using an emotion recognition AI （Kokoro-sensor） based on the Facial Action Coding System, and semi-structured interviews with staff members who observed the users.Findings from the quantitative analysis indicated that the effects of robot usage differed across individual users. The condition in which a robot interacted with a user in the presence of a third person elicited stronger feelings of happiness than the other two conditions. The semi-structured interviews also revealed broadly positive responses to the robot’s use.
