Description

Tumors arising in the parapharyngeal space are relatively rare. We analyzed 26 cases of parapharyngeal space tumor that had been treated in our hospital between 2004 and 2018. There were 14 men and 12 women; the patients ranged in age from 27 to 82 years. The pathological diagnosis of these tumors was predominantly schwannoma (12 cases), salivary gland tumors (10 cases) and others (4 cases). Preoperative imaging revealed that 11 tumors of poststyloid origin were schwannoma and 10 tumors of prestyloid origin were tumors of the salivary gland. The most common surgical approach was a cervical approach, followed by a cervical-parotid approach. There were 3 cases which required a mandibular swing approach. Postoperative complications were observed in 60% of these cases: cranial nerve paralysis in 9 cases, first bite syndrome in 5 cases, and edema of the pharyngolarynx in 6 cases.
