Description

Book and magazine sales in the Japanese publishing industry have decreased annually since 1997. Prior to that, annual sales had risen consistently since the end of World War II. This steady growth owed much to the knowledge and wisdom of those involved in publishing as well as to a readership that valued books and magazines as sources of education, entertainment and information. But it should not be forgotten that the existence of a skilled workforce in the printing and bookbinding fields coupled with various technological innovations made it possible to publish a wide variety of books in editions that sometimes exceeded millions of copies, as well as weekly magazines on extremely tight schedules and timely books on such events as the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup.
