Description

To study the effect of allophane on the strength developments of solidified-soil by cement-based solidifying agent (CBSA), solidified-soil specimens with different allophane contents were made with ordinary Portland cement (OPC) or CBSA, and compression tests, phase composition analyses by X-ray diffraction, and pH and Ca ion concentration measurements of the extracted pore solution were conducted. The results showed that the solidification inhibition occurs at different allophane contents for different binder types. At the XRD analysis, allophane was separated from other amorphous phases with PONCKS method, and it was shown that hydrated allophane couold contribute to the strength developments. The results indicated the possibility that two factors should be considered to predict the strength in cement improvement of volcanic ash clay containing allophane:calcium adsorption of allophane and reaction of allophane with calcium.
