Description
This paper introduces the system of arithmetic education in Daigaku-ryo (大学寮), an educational institution established to train bureaucrats in 8th century Japan. In particular, the author argues that Japanese Imperial Court did not completely adopt the educational policy given by the Tang Dynasty to various arithmetic textbooks. Second, the paper points out that Akihira Fujiwara’s (藤原明衡, 990? – 1066) Unshu Ourai (雲州往来) used arithmetic terms derived from Sunzi Suanjing (孫子算経).
