Description
Due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the life of Japanese university students in the academic years 2020–2021 was extremely different from that of ordinary academic years, with limited access to the campus, online classes, and a decrease in income from part-time jobs. We investigated the impact of the pandemic on university students by surveying undergraduate students who required temporary leave from school, dropped out of school, or died. We invited all national universities with undergraduate programs to participate in the survey.
The suicide rate in the academic years 2020–2021 was the highest in the past seven years. However, in most cases, it was unclear whether the death was linked to COVID-19. There were concerns that the number of students requiring temporary leave from school or who dropped out of school would rise, but both decreased compared to the previous academic years. Furthermore, those who needed temporary leave from school or dropped out for financial reasons did not increase.
The number of students who took a temporary leave to study or travel abroad was approximately half of what it had been in the previous academic years.
The pandemic has prolonged and we must continue the comparative study.
