Description

Fontan circulation causes Fontan-associated liver disease, but it is a crucial strategy that needs to be implemented in patients with functional single ventricle. Combined heart-liver transplantation has been performed in patients with Fontan circulation in other countries, with better long-term results being observed than heart transplantation. However, it is not feasible in Japan, where there is a donor shortage for heart transplantation. As an adult congenital heart disease specialist, I would like to discuss with hepatologists the possibility of liver transplantation for patients after Fontan operation.
