In order to understand just how time affected the way women dress following the Great Hanshin Earthquake, we compared photographs taken in Sannomiya, the central business area of Kobe that was heavily struck by the earthquake, and the unscathed Umeda district of Osaka.

We found that there was a discernible difference in choice of clothing and shoes : Kobe women preferred more practical clothing, and hats and cotton-masks were more prevalent in Sannomiya, giving the disaster area a very distinctive look.

Comparing pictures taken in Sannomiya during 1995, the year of the earthquake, and the following year revealed a similar result : immediately after the disaster, women chose more practical clothing and masks were much more widespread. Furthermore, as time passed and the city began to rebuild there was a tendency for these practical items to lose favor among women, and they were replaced by the normal clothes of old.

However, the experiment unveiled no remarkable difference in the color of clothing and usage of ruck sacks. And though the percentage of women wearing hats was higher in Sannomiya than in Umeda, and greater in 1995 than 1996, the overall ratio was still low.

This study shows that changes in women's clothing in the immediate post-earthquake period reveal women's attempts to adapt to their surrounding conditions, and at the same time offer insight into the psychological changes that affect people as they move away from times of extreme emergency and settle back into their old routines.
