Abstract

In astronomy education, one of the most important elements is observing real stars outdoors to learn about the universe. For this reason, a system that visitors can review at home and outdoors what they have learned at the science museum is necessary to achieve ideal astronomy education. Science museum curators can support it by utilizing information and communication technology (ICT). However, such realization may be difficult for curators who are not information or technology specialists. Although the digital astronomical teaching materials (which can be used with a cellular phone, a portable game machine, a handheld terminal, etc.) are also offered in recent years; the astronomical education, which is a curator's ideal, cannot be realized yet. In this research, we developed an astronomy teaching material that support constellation observation outdoors, and developed a teaching material management system, which enhances teaching materials distribution utilizing ICT. We created a "pleasure to find the genuine star by oneself" experience that was not conveyed with the existing digital astronomy teaching materials and, as a result of this experiment, a constant effect was shown, raising the learners' interest for astronomy.
