A self-consistent particle-fluid hybrid simulation model has been formulated based on the nonlinear gyrokinetics in which the electron inertia is retained. The characteristic function and the cumulant function of the electron distribution are employed in deriving the electron fluid response. This method provides a general and systematic way of deriving the moment equations based on the electron distribution function. The energy conservation property in the nonlinear gyrokinetic Vlasov-Poisson-Ampere system has also been re-examined for the present hybrid model, which has been shown to possess an exact energy invariant. The proposed hybrid simulation model is suitable for studying a variety of kinetic MHD instabilities in a tokamak where the electron inertia effect is important, such as collisionless m=1 mode instability.
