Abstract
The family Pimelodidae represents a very specious fish group but their phylogenetic relationships are still poorly known. In the present paper were cyiogenetically analyzed five specimens of Zungaro zungaro. Was observed a diploid number of 56 chromosomes and the karyotype are constituted by 32 M, 6 SM, 8 ST and 10 A chromosomes, with a fundamental number (FN) of 102. The nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) detected by AgNO_3 and CMA_3 Staining as well as fluorescence in situ hybridization with 18S rDNA probe, are located at terminal position on the short arms of a subtelocentric chromosome pair. All the applied techniques evidence a strong size heteromorphism between the NOR-bearing homologous chromosomes.
