Description
We propose a modification of the formula of Brozek et al. applicable to the estimation of body fat from body density in adult females. In the calculation of the formula, we followed the procedures which Brozek et al. adopted previously to obtain their formula, but we replaced "reference body" with standard-mass females ("female reference body"). We also replaced "obesity tissue" with "mass difference" taking bone mineral mass (M_<BM>) into consideration. We first determined M_<BM>, body fat mass (M_F) and lean tissue mass (M_<LT>) of the subjects with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Body density was then worked out, based on M_<BM>, M_F and M_<LT> of the subjects and on bone mineral density, fat density and lean tissue density of "reference body". The findings were as follows: body density (D_B) of "female reference body" was 1.052 kg/l and percentage body fat (f_B) was 22.O%. The density of "mass difference" was 0.955 kg/l and percentage fat was 71.0%. We then followed the same procedures as Brozek et al. to determine the ralationship between f_B and D_B, and as a result derived a modified formula for adult females relating D_B and f_B: f_B = 507.5/D_B-460.4 This modified formula was subsequently verified to be more valid than the original formula as proposed by Brozek et al. to estimate body fat of adult females from their body density.
