The components in an ITER fuel system have been designed by estimating the tritium inventory and by performing accident analyses. The system has two primary characteristics: a large amount of tritium (1 kg) exists in the system; and a high-purity product stream must be supplied to plasma by processing various plasma exhaust gases. It is a significant project to develop a simulation code for such a system and to design control and tritium accountancy systems. A control system for a cryogenic distillation column, which is one of the essential components of the fuel system, was introduced as a typical example for this study. In the course of tritium handling in a particular processing system, the interactions between the tritium in the gas phase and the surfaces of the system affect the transitional response of tritium levels in the process gases at the outlet of the system. The authors call this phenomenon the system effect. A means of quantifying the system effect is briefly introduced.
