Iro-Setsuden, a book written in classical Chinese, contains many folk tales created by rewriting documents written in the old Japanese epistolary style (sorobun). These documents were submitted by local officials to Shuri government in the former part of the 18th century. This paper translates some original texts (seven stories selected out of approximately 140 stories) into contemporary Japanese. and examines the context of Iro-Setsuden's contents, by focusing on the tales on historical events or persons of ancient Ryukyu. The examination suggests that these historical tales include subjects of virtue or ethics. This is important in understanding this book with regard to the purpose and significance of its compilation among other history books of Ryukyu.
