Abstract
The Special interest Group on Pattern Recognition and Media Understanding (PRMU) has been promoting an annual algorithm contest on pattern recognition and media understanding since 1997. The 7th this year contest, the theme is the counting the number of people from room video sequences. The problems of the contest are divided into the 3 levels according to the existence of the background objects and the change of lighting conditions. As a result of the invitation, 68 entries of 30 algorithms were accepted. Then, the jury considered 6 algorithms as winning prize. In Forum on Information Technology (FIT2003), PRMU performed the announcement of the examination result, the commendation ceremony, and the presentations of the algorithms of the prizewinners. This report describes the summary of the contest and the details of the prizewinners' algorithms.
